The mission of the Durham
Affordable Housing Coalition (DAHC) is to promote safe,
fair and affordable housing in Durham, North Carolina.
Incorporated in 1990, the Coalition is a nonprofit
agency working for social justice through the support of housing and
community development. Our guiding principles are:
- In a society where divisions run deep, we weave coalitions.
- We seek to reduce poverty by building wealth.
- Our advocacy generates private and public investment in lower
income households and neighborhoods.
- Our currency is trust. We hold ourselves accountable to our
clients, funders, community and cause.
SERVICES
To fulfill our mission, DAHC provides a variety of
services including:
- Helping low- and moderate-income households purchase and
maintain their homes.
- Assisting nonprofit affordable housing providers secure needed
resources to maintain and / or expand affordable housing programs.
- Facilitating the Campaign for Decent
Housing, a community initiative to bring 4,000
substandards homes up to Minimum Housing Code by 2003.
- Woking on Fair Housing and Fair Lending issues.
- Helping Special Needs Populations find affordable rental
housing.
- Marketing the City of Durham's home purchase programs for low-
and moderate-income households.
- Increasing Public Awareness on the Health Hazards of
Lead-based Paint and working with the City and other partners to
reduce Lead Poisoning, especially among children under age six.
In 1997, DAHC received a Nonprofit Sector
Stewart Award from the North Carolina Center for
Nonprofits for exemplary stewardship of the public trust.
